The Kensico Dam Plaza is in Valhalla, adjacent to White Plains.
September 11th has become a day of reflection for many, and it was one for me this year.
The Rising is a 9/11 Memorial honoring Westchester County’s fallen citizens from that fateful event.
In Norse mythology, Valhalla means “hall of the (valiant) dead.” Kensico is named after a Siwanoy Chief from the 19th century. The Kensico Dam was constructed in 1885 and is part of the reservoir system that services New York City.
While the Reservoir quietly performs its role, the Plaza has been developed to provide respite and recreation for the locals. For children, there is a playground.
But children should not have all the fun, so there is a fitness trail for grown folks, too.
When you are ready to elevate, take the stairs to the top of the dam. It may leave you breathless, but the view at the top is breathtaking.
The vista to the north is the water at eye level.
While to the south is the plaza from a bird’s eye view.
In between and all around are columns and a road no longer open to public vehicular traffic.
The Greek styling is a nod to tradition while the functionality remains basic, but modern.
A place named in part by the large surrounding cemetery also houses regional trauma center Westchester Medical while providing life sustaining water to the NYC Metropolitan Area. A place for reflection indeed, and another fitting backdrop for capturing memories through photography.
