Considered “one of the best-preserved 19th century townscapes in the Hudson River region,” Cold Spring is a village in Putnam County across the river from the imposing Storm King Mountain. The town was founded in 1730 as a trading post. Its peak industrial activity occurred during the Civil War when the West Point Foundry provided munitions for the Union Army and manufactured the Parrot rifle cannon. Today, it is far more than just a “living museum” to its 2,000 residents. With its Metro North Railroad (MNR) stop about an hour and fifteen minutes from Grand Central Terminal, it also serves as an excellent daytrip or extended weekend option for countless visitors in the Metropolitan New York area due to its history, restaurants, shops, architecture, galleries, kayaking, biking paths, and hiking trails.
If you arrive via train and head west, you will be on the riverside. This “side” of the track is also called the Upper Village where you will see a Parrot cannon pointed towards the Hudson River and behind it, the bandstand. Across the street is the Hudson House Inn, which has operated since 1832. Next door is Moo Moo’s Creamery, a spot renowned for its ice cream. I had the Dulce de Leche which was very nice! Other historic lodgings include the Pig Hill Inn.
Across the street are well-maintained, stylish row houses with direct views of the Hudson. These are among the many examples of various architectural styles of homes dating back centuries. To get to the Lower Village, head east and take the unobtrusive passage that runs under the MNR tracks.
Look to the north and you will see the (train) Depot, which is well integrated into the town while reflecting its look and feel.
Stop in for some food or a cold beverage. Alternatively, continue east to see more of the over 200 residential, commercial, and ecclesiastical buildings that dot the Historic District.
A shop within an ivy-laced, 19th century building changes its window display.
Our Lady of Loretto or Saint Mary’s are among the options for worship.
Federal style homes, painted ladies, and other styles abound.

For you architectural aficionados out there, there is no shortage of eye-candy. For those who want to hike, there is Breakneck Ridge, which offers commanding views of the Hudson River. Interested in gardens or woodlands? Consider Manitoga, Stonecrop Gardens, or Boscobel. (See our other garden pictorial in lower Westchester). Into that Renaissance vibe? Don’t sleep on Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival. Take in some history (and get a workout) by kayaking to Pollepel Island which houses Bannerman Castle. Guided tours are available from Beacon, across the water. This list is not exhaustive of the various activities you could pursue while in Cold Spring.
Before heading home, as we looked wistfully across the river again, we noticed a rallying cry from West Point harkening back to its long-standing “friendly” rivalry – “Beat Air Force.”
Tradition, history, fun, and artistry – all in one magical spot. The entire town makes for a great backdrop for capturing images that will be suitable for framing. Want to book a photoshoot with Avery to capture memories? Call us on (917) 500-3599 or leave your contact information.
