This picture may look like it is out of this world. It is – and it isn’t. Located in Yonkers, Untermyer Gardens is a 43-acre urban oasis from another time inspired by other cultures – in this instance, Persian and Greek, to be specific. Formerly part of the Greystone Estate in Yonkers, Samuel Untermyer began developing the Gardens circa 1915. Untermyer was a founding partner of the firm of Guggenheimer, Untermyer & Marshall. He is cited as “the first lawyer in America to earn a one-million-dollar fee on a single case” (equivalent to over $35 million today).
In addition to the fountains framed by griffins sitting atop columns near the entrance of the Walled Garden, the Temple of Love is another must-see.
It is breathtaking, whether you are looking downhill facing the Hudson River or whether you are peering upwards with the Hudson to your back.
Speaking of breathtaking, gaze on the Hudson River and the Palisades behind it taken from the garden.
While these items are well-preserved, the Greystone Estate itself wasn’t. It ultimately was torn down. Likewise, the Carriage House gateway from the old Croton Aqueduct fell into disrepair but has been restored from its blighted condition and is now referred to as the “Ruin Garden.”
These pictures memorialize a wonderful day trip. However, to really take it all in, book some time to visit Untermyer Gardens in person to commune with nature. Reflect on another place and time set in the same space it was a century ago. Additionally, if you are looking for an inspiring background for an impromptu photoshoot, add this venue to your shortlist. If you have an interest in learning more about “practical planting” – landscape design that incorporates tree canopy and connects gardens while considering fragrance, seasons, natural and man-made elements, watch videos on YouTube put out by the organization.
